YPIE’s held its first Ivy League Alumni Interview Day on February 4th at Yonkers Middle/High School. Four universities – Brown, Dartmouth, Princeton and Yale – participated by sending alumni interviewers to meet one-on-one with applicants from the Yonkers Public School District. This year, fifteen Yonkers students had interviews.
For many Yonkers high school seniors, it is difficult to schedule college interviews because of a lack of transportation and the costs involved in traveling to college campuses. Hosting an Ivy League Alumni Interview Day in Yonkers enabled students to meet with interviewers from multiple colleges on one day, in a convenient, familiar location.
Through the power of Naviance, YPIE was able to identify students who applied to these institutions and coordinate a productive day of interviews for all participants. According to Angela Pastorelli Sosa, one of the students who took part in the day, ”The interviews are important because meeting people in person lets me show that there’s a real person behind all the documents and statistics that get submitted to a college.”
Doug Ulene, an alumni interviewer from Brown said, “I not only got to meet with four great applicants, but I got to meet with all of them in one place. YPIE’s Interview Day made this process a lot more efficient for me in a location that was convenient for the students. And it accomplished all of this without making the interviews feel rushed or impersonal.”
This year’s event was such a tremendous success and other universities have already committed to participate next year.
