Inspiring Students in Yonkers and Jersey City
We are proud to announce the launch of our new Design Major, which aims at fostering creativity and innovation among students in Yonkers and Jersey City. This major is designed to encourage students to think critically, collaborate, and explore new ways of problem-solving.
To kick off this exciting new major, YPIE students from both cities recently embarked on inspiring field trips. The first stop for Jersey City students was the Liberty Science Center, where they explored interactive exhibits that highlighted the intersection of design, technology, and science. From the architecture of the building to the innovative exhibits, the center provided a firsthand look at how design influences everything from engineering to user experience. The trip sparked their imaginations, allowing them to see the real-world applications of design thinking and how it shapes everyday life and groundbreaking innovations.
In Yonkers, students explored the Hudson River Museum, where they were immersed in a rich collection of art, history, and design. The museum’s exhibits provided an opportunity for students to explore different artistic styles, historical contexts, and creative processes that have shaped design throughout history. Engaging with the museum's thought-provoking displays, students began to connect the dots between artistic expression and practical design, deepening their understanding of how design influences culture and society.
These field trips were just the beginning of what promises to be an exciting journey for students in YPIE's new Design Major. Their first assignment involves designing a custom board game, challenging students to dive deep into the elements of game design, from mechanics to player interaction. This hands-on project will help them develop critical skills in user experience, visual communication, and problem-solving, all while learning how design can be applied to interactive and immersive experiences.
YPIE Design Scholars will also engage in collaborative projects, participate in design challenges, and have opportunities to work with industry professionals, all aimed at preparing them for future careers in fields such as graphic design, game design, architecture, and product development.
