Nearly 200 ninth-grade students from Yonkers Public Schools embarked on their path to college by being inducted as Yonkers Partners in Education (YPIE) Scholars, a community of students preparing for success in college and beyond.
Incoming YPIE Scholars and their families filled the Yonkers Riverfront Library auditorium on December 17th for the YPIE Scholars Induction Ceremony, a celebration of educational excellence and promising futures for our young people.
Yonkers Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Edwin M. Quezada spoke to the incoming Scholars and their parents. “This is exciting that you have accepted the challenge, the opportunity to partner with an organization that is looking to guide and help you on a daily basis,” said Dr. Quezada, “Yonkers Partners in Education has been working with us for a long time and what they do is magical.”
Valentina, a senior attending Saunders Trades & Technical High School, shared her experience as a YPIE Scholar throughout high school. “Without YPIE I wouldn't be the student that I am today. The staff and teachers at YPIE are so dedicated and invested in your education.”
After her remarks, Valentina was joined by YPIE Scholar Hazel to lead the incoming Scholars in the YPIE Commitment to Excellence.
As part of this program, students will work with YPIE from grades nine through the second year of college. Students in the program attend the after school YPIE College Zone for an extended learning day of rigorous college-prep courses, and work with YPIE staff and volunteer mentors from around Westchester.
